January PubTalks to Focus on “Green” Business Practices
“Green” business practices can be helpful in a variety of ways: not only are they good for the environment, but they can also attract customers and end up saving money over the long term. This month’s PubTalk® focuses on the benefits of environmentally-friendly business practices such as recycling, energy-efficient construction, the use of renewable energy sources, and more. PubTalk® is a business networking event hosted by the Northeast Oregon Economic Development District (NEOEDD) and Community Bank.
The Wallowa County PubTalk® will take place on Tuesday, January 25th, at 6:00 pm at Mutiny Brewing in Joseph and feature presentations from several local businesses. Belle Pepper’s Bed and Breakfast in Joseph is committed to sustainable business practices, and owner Pepper McColgan will share the story of the “green remodeling” of their 1915 historic McCully House, as well as other practices that make this popular business “green.” Scott and Vickie Crane will talk about their new business, Wallowa Mountain Casket Company, and the market opportunities created by the demand for green burials.
In Union County, the PubTalk® will be held Wednesday, January 26th, at 6:00 pm at Mt. Emily Ale House in La Grande. John Howard of John J. Howard & Associates Real Estate will share his experiences in upgrading the energy efficiency of the Phoenix Building in historic downtown La Grande. Rich Beedle of Jadato, LLC in La Grande will talk about affordable green business strategies that can help cut costs. He will also provide information on the international green building certification, LEED. Beedle has worked in construction trades for over 30 years, specializing in energy-efficient design and construction, including day lighting and passive solar.
The Union County event will also include a business pitch from Dr. Casey McKeown of Grande Ronde Chiropractic and Spinal Decompression Center in La Grande, who specializes in the treatment of sports injury and rehab, auto accidents, low back & neck pain, headaches, work injuries, and wellness care. In addition, Rocky Hunter will give a pitch on his family-owned business, Flying Cloud Gifts. The business started as a gift shop on the family Christmas tree farm, developed a major online sales presence, and now has plans for more changes in the near future.
